Myrtis Cooksey Elrod, a retired Waco store employee, died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 73.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. J.A. Haley and the Rev. Greg Brumit officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Elrod was born July 22, 1917, in Taladega, Ala., and attended school in that area. She married Leonard Elrod in 1953, he died in 1989. The Elrod's moved to Waco in 1953. Mrs. Elrod worked for Woolworths in downtown Waco for 15 years and for Gibson's Discount Center on Franklin Avenue for 13 1/2 years before she retired in 1980. She was a member of Kendrick Lane Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Don (Wanda) Stanford of Woodway; two sons, Michael Elrod and Robert Handley, both of Waco: four brothers, Lois Cooksey and Grady Cooksey, both of Birmingham, Ala.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Kendrick Lane Baptist Church.
Clifton Jerome (Jerry) Evans, a local Boy Scout coordinator, died Saturday at a Waco hospital. He was 44.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Rufus McClain officiating. Burial will be at Rosemound Cemetery.
Mr. Evans was born Feb. 3, 1947, in McLennan County. He was a graduate of A.J. Moore High School and a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. He later joined Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church. There he was a young adult usher and member of the senior usher board. He worked with the youth department as a Boy Scout Coordinator and coached volleyball teams. He married Carolyn Peoples on March 24, 1972.
Survivors include his wife, a son, Kevin Evans of Waco; eight sisters, Dorothy Long and Verta Benson, both of Waco, Sheryl Graves, Mildred Evans and Annie Evans, all of Fort Worth, and Margaret Graves, Deborah Evans, and Cathy Evans, all of California; a brother, Milton Evans Jr. of New York; and his stepmother, Mary Evans of Waco.
The family will receiver visitors from 7 to 8:30 tonight at W.H. Littles & Sons Mortuary.
