Jessie Hill Barnard, 92, of Freeport, Texas passed away Friday, July 16, 2004 at Country Village Care in Angleton, Texas. Jessie was born May 12,
1912 in Mart, Texas, to Clara Breland and Jesse Richard Hill. She spent most of her early years in Mart, graduating valedictorian, and worked for the daily newspaper as office manager and reporter. She was married in 1932 to Upton Barnard and they resided there and in Waco until moving to Freeport in 1943. She worked many years as a bookkeeper for Swann's Western Auto and Darwood's Furniture.
Jessie was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Freeport, serving on most of the committees and boards, and was a Sunday school teacher for more than 25 years. She was a past president and Life Member of the Social Order of the Beauceant, Assembly 232. She worked many years in their programs to furnish eye treatment and surgeries for needy people, especially children. As a member of Good Sams club, she worked for the Dogs for the Deaf program. She and her family also established an Endowed Scholarship at Texas A&M, in memory of her brother Lt. Richard Hill, who lost his life in WWII.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years, Upton Barnard, their son Rev. Michael Upton Barnard, her brother, Edward Hill and sister-in-law Estelle, her brother Richard Hill, her sister Lillian Wisnewski Bennett, her brother Leslie Wisnewski, and her granddaughter Brittany Lynn Barnard.
She is survived by a son, Anthony (Tony) Barnard and wife Cheryl of Lake Jackson; her daughter-in-law Lucie Barnard Greene and husband Bill of Lampasas; a sister, Mary Lou Wisnewski of Lubbock; three grandchildren: Rev. Mark Barnard and wife C.J. of Burnet, Andrea Barnard Pelczar and husband John of Austin, and Kelley Barnard of Lake Jackson; one niece Sharon Hill Jessamine and husband Benny of Fort Worth; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family expresses sincere thanks to her special caregiver Isabell Franklin, the caregivers at Country Village Care, and to everyone who has shown love and care for Mother through the years.
Funeral services were 10 A.M. Tuesday, July 20th at First United Methodist Church of Freeport with Rev. Alex Luppo officiating.
Interment was at 6:00 P.M. at Mart Cemetery with Rev. Mark Barnard officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Mamie & Memorial Circles of 1st United Methodist Church of Freeport, and the members of the Social Order of the Beauceant.
