MAY 17, 1912

Much surprise and regret was occasioned Sunday afternoon when the north bound six o'clock I.& G.N. passenger train brought in the mutilated body of Dave Chapman whose home was about 2 1-2 miles south of town. It seems that there is a curve of the railroad just opposite his home and it was there the deplorable accident occurred-he having been struck by the train. The engineer saw the body of a man, apparently asleep, on the edge of the track, but too late to stop the engine before it struck and dragged the body a short distance.  It proved to be Dave Chapman, a relative of Mrs. Dave Matthews, J.W. Howard and others here. He was carried at once to the emergency hospital at the Y.M.C.A. and physicians summoned, but it was found that he had received serious internal injuries and was beyond hope of human aid.
He died at 8 p.m., shortly after being removed to the home of his brother-in-law, Tom Ingram, in South Mart.
The body was held for the arrival of his brother, Will Chapman, from West Texas, interment being made Tuesday afternoon in Mart Cemetery.

Robt. Jones, Sr. died Saturday afternoon after a long illness. The body was carried to Lott for burial. The Herald extends condolence to the bereaved ones.

Eddie Shelton, a leading citizen of the Axtell community, was accidentally drowned while on a duck hunt, May 10th. Deceased was a brother-in-law to Ed Castleman and Jim Sypert of Elk. He leaves a wife and one child, besides numerous friends and relatives, to mourn his loss. They
have the sympathy of the Herald.
