Shiloh I............Shiloh II............Shiloh III...............Ovilla
Enclosed are plot maps and lists for the cemeteries in Ovilla, TX. There are 3 Shiloh cemeteries now. #1 was the original started about 1850. Shiloh II was an addition started in 1974. Shiloh III is the most recent and it opened in 1992. All three are actually the same cemetery but labeled separately for records purposes. All are owned by the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ovilla, Ellis County, TX.
# 1 -Shiloh I cemetery has the earliest recorded stone of 1851. I am sure there were
burials before then, since the church was formed in 1847, but no lasting markers were set.
We have closed it to sales because we have dug into graves and don't want to do it again
if we can help it. We know of some people who own plots in it and suspect many more
that were sold plots but never recorded. The old man who used to run the cemeteries was
proud of the fact that he had it all up here (tapping the side of his head) but unfortunately
he died and took it with him. I have given you a plot map and a list of names taken from the stones.
You will note a column marked "8". This means they are buried. If a date appears that
is correct. If no date appears it means we probably picked up that information from some
other source and do not know where the grave is. If no "8" appears it means a stone has
be erected and they are still alive or buried some other place. There appear to be some
duplications but it is because a mate died and a double stone was erected then the
remaining mate remarried and is buried by the second marker.
In locating graves use only the letter and the first number. The numbers behind the dash
( -) are for a revised system we are still working on. Sad but true.
Our proudest things are the concrete driveways and sidewalks. We are just now finishing the
"meditation point" on the top of the hill in Shiloh. it is hoped
that over time people will put up benches in memorials. Dale Helm
Shiloh ! is complete and if a B appears it means they are buried. If no B it means they have a headstone erected but are either still alive or buried somewhere else.
