Flat Rock Cemetery

Decatur, Wise Co. Cemeteries of Tx

Submitted By: Sue Tackel

Flat Rock Cemetery is located seven miles North of Decatur, on the old Alvord Highway, once known as the Meridian Highway. Very early (date unknown) a Presbyterian Church was built near some large, flat rocks in the area --- hence the name Flat Rock.

The First person buried here, according to legend, was an Indian and the second person to be buried here was a small girl. Her parents were traveling through the county by wagon and had made camp near here when the child was stricken with an illness and died. They buried her on this little plat of land. But no marker remains. Simple sandstone markers with no inscriptions mark the earliest graves. Many have been displaced or disappeared.

The earliest recorded death here is that of the infant daughter of F. & E. Elsom —- 1878. Also in 1878 Sarah Jane Manning, wife of J.R. Manning, was buried here. In 1884 Marrie, daughter of S.L. & L.A. Ray was buried here. From then on the number increases each year. G.W. Stevens, Texas Ranger, and the "watchdog of the county" during the Indian depredation days is also buried here. He was born July 12,1831 and died April 11,1893. His grave has been marked with a Historical Marker. The cemetery is still open for burials and still being used occasionally.

Flat Rock was in the path the Indians followed on their numerous raids into the county. Catlett Creek is near the cemetery.
