Submitted by: Victor Smith Deed John Roberts to James Tayler, 21 July 1820 This Indenture made this 21st Day of July in the year of our Lord 1820 Between John Roberts & Elizabeth his wife of the County of Washington and State of Virginia of the one part, and James Tayler of the County & State aforesaid. Witness, that the said John Roberts and Elizabeth his wife for & in consideration of the sum of fifteen hundred dollars to them in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do grant bargain & sell unto the said James Tayler one tract or parcel of land, lying in the County of Washington on the North side of the North fork of Holstein River, below the Laurel fork of said river and bounded as follows, to wit, Beginning at a whiteoak on a ridge N15 W54 poles to a gum on the side of a hollow at a fork of the hollow S16 W152 poles to a hiccory nearly in a hollow S28 E88 poles to two whiteoaks S4 W48 poles to a double poplar on the bank of the river then up the river & bending thereon as it meanders 172 poles to the mouth of the Laurel fork bending thereon as it meanders 70 poles to a stake on the bank near a cherry tree then leaving the said Laurel fork N74 W83 poles to the Beginning. To have and To hold the said tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenances unto the said James Tayler & his heirs to the sole use & behoof of him the said James Tayler and his heirs forever. And the said John Roberts & Elizabeth his wife for themselves and their heirs do covenant with the said James Tayler and his heirs that they the said John Roberts & Elizabeth his wife the said tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenance unto the said James Tayler and his heirs against the claims of all persons claiming whomsoever Shall Warrant and will forever defend. In Witness whereof the said John Roberts & Elizabeth his wife have hereunto subscribed their names affixed their seals the day & year first above written. John Roberts S.S. Elizabeth Roberts S.S. Signed sealed & delivered in presence of Charles Tate, H D Poston, William Tate Washington County, to wit, We Charles Tate & H D Poston magistrates of the said county do hereby certify that John Roberts and Elizabeth his wife parties to the within Conveyance duly acknowledged the same before us on the 21st day July 1820 & desired to certify the said acknowledgement to the Clerk of the County Court of Washington in order that the said conveyance may be recorded. Washington County to wit, We Charles Tate & H D Poston justices of the peace in the County aforesaid & State of Virginia do hereby certify that Elizabeth Roberts wife of John Roberts party to the within Conveyance of real estate to James Tayler bearing date on the day of March 1820 personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid & being examined by us privily & apart from her husband & having the Deed aforesaid fully explained to her she the said Elizabeth Roberts acknowledged the same to be her Act and Deed & declared that she had willingly signed sealed & delivered it, and that she wished not to retract it. The foregoing Indenture of bargain & sale was delivered to the Clerk of Washington County on this 25th day of September 1820 and admitted to Record Teste Jacob Lynch D. C. NOTE: This is part of the same land as purchased by Billingsley Roberts of Maryland in 1781 from Arthur Campbell. Richard and John Roberts are heirs to the land per Billingsley Roberts Will. They received a Deed for the land from William Campbell in 1819. This specific parcel of land was deeded to John and Elizabeth by Richard Roberts, deed recorded September 7, 1820, Book, 7, Pages 241 and 242.
