A drive through the towns comprising the Brookfields is an experience. Brookfield seems to exists in another era.  It is the only town in the state of Vermont whose main street is a dirt road. Its backdrop is historic old houses. 
Easily one of the most picturesque four corners in all of New England, 
this sleepy community belies its vivid past.

Among its boasts, are the states oldest continuously operating library (established in 1791), and a house in which the Prince of Wales, father of Queen Victoria, not only slept in but also received a kick in the pants.

Sunset Lake is crossed by a floating bridge, buoyed by 380 barrels, (the lake is too deep to support a pillared span). The lake is the site of much fishing off the bridge and in January it is a coveted viewing point for one of New England's last remaining ice harvest festivals.  At the village center is Green Trails Inn with extensive cross country skiing trails.

The house was the home of a Brookfield blacksmith and is now operated as a museum. Collections include costumes, 19th-century home furnishings, locally manufactured articles, photographs, and local ephemera. 

There are guided tours, an annual ice cream social, and other special events.

July and Aug, Sun, 2 – 5pm, 
and by special arrangement. 
Admission $2 donation.
