"Herbert W. Fletcher -- Saxtons River -- Herbert W. Fletcher, 71, died Wednesday at the Springfield Convalescent Center after a long illness.

"He was born April 27, 1921, in Westminster, the son of Herbert and Hazel (Shepard) Fletcher. He received his schooling in Grafton. He was married to Myrtle Nichols on Dec. 24, 1944 in Saxtons River.

"Mr. Fletcher worked as a lumberman for a few years and worked for several garages in the Saxtons River and Bellows Falls area. He owned and operated the Fletcher Garage in Saxtons River from 1956 to 1966 and worked for Whitcomb Construction for several years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and all the outdoors. He lived in the Grafton area for a few years and then moved to Saxtons River.

"Mr. Fletcher is survived by: his wife of Saxtons River; a half-brother, Walter Fletcher; an uncle, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Frazier, in 1970 and a granddaughter, Nancy Frazier, in 1963.

"A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Saxtons River Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas McMillan will officate.

"Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 431 Pine St., Burlington, Vt. 05401 or to the Vermont Kidney Association.

"Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams Funeral Home in Chester."
