Died, at Frankfort, S.D., on April 4th, 1901, at the age of 74, Stephen Welch, on of the early settlers of Clark County and well known throughout our locality.

Deceased was born in Dexter, Mich., in 1827, and six years later removed with his parents to Milwaukee, Wis., where he remained until the fall of 1861. He then enlisted as a volunteer in the Union cause and during the war participated in the battles of Holly Springs and Vicksburg, and the memorable march with Sherman to Atlanta. In 1865 he received honorable discharge from the army and returned to Wisconsin. In 1873 he married Miss Johanna Cushing of Neillsville, and soon after located in Lynn, being one of the first settlers in that township. Several years later he purchased the Brooks farm at Pleasant Ridge, where he lived until his removal to South Dakota in the summer of 1896.

Mr. Welch is survived by his wife and son James of Frankfort, and a daughter, Mrs. H. Cooley, of York, Jackson County. He was a kind and genial man, loved and respected by all who knew him. The remains were interred in the Frankfort Cemetery.
