Sternitzky, Frederick (25 OCT 1806 - 25 OCT 1901)

Frederick Sternitzky, familiarly known as Grandpa Sternitzky, died at the home of his son Henry at Lynn, Clark County, Friday, Oct. 25, 1901. He was one of the earliest settler of that vicinity and probably the oldest inhabitant of the county, lacking but one day of being 95 years old. He was born in Germany Oct. 25, 1806. In 1831 he was married to Miss Helena Vitzey and came to America in 1840. After living in Buffalo, N.Y., one year they came to Milwaukee, where they resided fifteen years. Forty-five years ago they came with their family to Clark County, settling at Lynn, where they have lived ever since. The family consisted of ten children, eight sons and two daughters, of whom four sons and the two daughters still survive. He leaves also thirty-five grandchildren and fifty-seven great-grandchildren. The family is one of the most respected and substantial in this vicinity, being prominent in local affairs and having taken an active part in the growth and development of their neighborhood. The oldest son Carl died in Jan. 1900, and the mother followed five weeks later. The subject of this sketch had been confined to his bed for the past eight years, though he retained his faculties and was able to read even without glasses. For some time he had made his home with his youngest son Henry. The funeral was the largest ever held in the county. Over sixty of his descendants met about his grave as mourners, and old friends came for miles around. The procession was over half a mile in length. The deceased was a man of good qualities, and wonderful patience. During his long illness he was never heard to complain.
