Shafer, Sam J. (? - 6 May 1902)

A telegram announce that Sam J. Shafer, senior Editor of the Colby Phonograph, had died suddenly Tuesday evening, May 6, 1902, at his home in Colby. His brother Joel Shafer, member of the county board, had been summoned by telegram early in the day. Death was probably due to heart disease from which deceased was a sufferer, though details of the death have not reached us at this writing.

Sam Shafer was a prominent figure in Northern Wisconsin journalism and politics for many years. He was genial, whole souled, intelligent and awake to the interests of his locality. He was a man whom it was a pleasure to meet, and his death is a great loss, not alone to his family, the journal with which he was connected, his own little city, (the rest of my copy was cut off)
