Savage, Charles (19 Dec 1876 - 30 Jul 1903)

Chas. Savage who resided on the North Side (Neillsville, Clark County), died suddenly July 30, 1903 while pitching hay on the farm of Geo. Jacques Sr., in Pine Valley. Lon Cook who was with him at work ran for assistance when he sank down and a physician was summoned, but life had gone out before anything could be done. Deceased came here about a year ago, purchasing the E.M. Stevens house. He was an industrious hard working man who had won the respect of all in the neighborhood. It is supposed that the heat and hard work of the day before he died had affected his heart and the hard work of pitching had overcome him, though at the time the day was cool. He leaves a wife and little son to mourn his sad and sudden death. His age was 26 years, 7 months and 11 days. The funeral was held Sunday, Prof. B.E. Smith officiating. His father and brother from Vernon County, were deceased was born, were present for the funeral.

(Follow on in 8/20/1903 R & P) On July 30th occurred the sudden death of Mr. Charles N. Savage of Neillsville, Clark Co. Wis., while employed in haying on the George L. Jacques farm about five mile from his home. About two o'clock Mr. Savage loaded about one half ton of hay on his wagon to finish topping out a stack; he pitched about half of his load apparently in good health, he stuck his fork into the hay, stated to raise the fork load of hay, when he said "Oh my God" and fell backward on the remaining part of the load and expired without a struggle. The doctor was summoned as soon as possible, he pronounced his death sun stroke, but from the coolness of the day and the short time he labored after dinner, it could not be possible. Other professional men pronounced his death heart failure.

Charles N. Savage was born in the town of Webster, Vernon Co., Wis. Dec. 19th, 1876. Died July 30th, 1903, age twenty six years, seven months and eleven days. He leaves to mourn his demise his wife, one son, three years old, father, four sisters, and two brothers and Grandfather Savage and a host of friends. The wife and relatives extend thanks to the neighbors and friends of Neillsville for their kindness in laying to rest their deceased, which interment occurred Aug. 2nd in the Neillsville Cemetery. Funeral service being held at the home, conducted by Rev. B. Smith.

Mr. Savage was a man of intelligence and was very firm and decisive. He had a keen sense of justice and right, and if an error was committed in which some man did not, in his opinion get his just dues, it haunted his mind until it was made right. He ever prized the happiness of his family higher than his own and the best was always theirs. He did not belong to any church but was a firm believer that God would do justice to every man according to his works.
