Tufts, W. S. (? - 24 Augl 1903)

News was received in this city Monday that W. S. Tufts had died that morning at his home in Withee, Clark County. He had been in poor health for some time, but his death was quite unexpected. Mr. tufts was one of the pioneers of Withee, coming to that place and establishing a store when the surrounding country was a wilderness. He engaged extensively in logging and accumulated considerable wealth, though later he met with business reverses. He was a genial whole-souled man, open hearted, kind and hospitable. He was elected sheriff of this county in 1898, returning to Withee at the close of his term to engage in real estate business. He was a man who had many friends and few enemies. His kindness had endeared him to the poor and needy of his vicinity who he had helped with open hand, and his death will bring profound sorrow to many. He was not without faults or weaknesses, but his broad hospitality, genuine sympathy, and good will overshadowed these, and he will be remembered by all that was good in his character. The funeral will be held this afternoon at Greenwood, under the auspices of the Free Masons.
