McGinnis, Julia (1835 - 27 Apr 1904)

Mrs. Peter McGinnis who died in Neillsville, Clark County, Wednesday, April 27, 1904, was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y. in 1835. Her maiden name was Julia Welsh. She was married to Peter McGinnis in 1855 and lived in New York fourteen years. They then came west, residing in La Crosse Co. for three years, when they moved to the town of Sherwood Forest in this county. For 32 years they made their home there, clearing up and cultivating a large farm. As old age grew upon them and their children went out into the world they decided to rent the farm and move to Neillsville to spend their declining years. They had scarcely got settled here before the fatal illness came which left the home desolate. While living a life devoted to her home and family, deceased was a remarkable woman, one who contributed more to the world's welfare than many whose pretensions were greater. Of her thirteen children, all but one grew to manhood and womanhood and survive her, filling respectable and useful places in their community. Her nine daughters and one of the sons were at the funeral, together with several grandchildren. The following are the names of her surviving children: Mrs. John Short, Mrs. John Welsh, Mrs. Geo. Isham, Mrs. Emery Bruley, Mrs. Geo. Shafer, Mrs. J.E. Phillips, Mrs. L. Joregensen, Miss Agnes and Miss Lillian McGinnis, P.J. McGinnis of La Crosse, Frank who is in British Columbia and William who is in Washington. She leaves besides 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

The funeral took place Friday at the Catholic Church, Rev. Father Hauck officiating.

The husband and family wish to express their thanks and gratitude for the help and sympathy of friends and neighbors.
