September 18, 1924

Aid met with Anna Horn Sept. 18. Meeting opened by reading nine verses of thirty-ninth Psalm.

FOR JEDUTHUN, THE CHOIR DIRECTOR: A PSALM OF DAVID

Psalm 39

1 I said to myself, I will watch what I do
and not sin in what I say.
I will curb my tongue
when the ungodly are around me.

2 But as I stood there in silence
not even speaking of good things
the turmoil within me grew to the bursting point.

3 My thoughts grew hot within me
and began to burn,
igniting a fire of words:

4 LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.
Remind me that my days are numbered,
and that my life is fleeing away.

5 My life is no longer than the width of my hand.
An entire lifetime is just a moment to you
human existence is but a breath.
Interlude

6 We are merely moving shadows,
and all our busy rushing ends in nothing.
We heap up wealth for someone else to spend.

7 And so, Lord, where do I put my hope
My only hope is in you.

8 Rescue me from my rebellion,
for even fools mock me when I rebel.
8 I am silent before you I won t say a word.

9 For my punishment is from you.

I am trying to locate a church that is on the north side of 29. it is boarded up and has a cemetery behind it. I want to know the history on it and why it is boarded up. if you have any info that would be helpful please let me know. Thank you very much! Amanda Cherie`

Amanda,
We just recently received a large amount of information on St. Hedwig's. We'll be scanning it and posting it in September.

The church you are talking about is St. Hedwig's Church, about 2 or 3 miles east of Thorp, WI. It is maybe a half mile north of Hwy 29, about a quarter mile north of County Hwy X (Old 29). I am not sure of the age of that building, but believe that St. Hedwig's church dates from around 1900. About that time, its location was called Poznan. It was an ethnic Polish church. There is a train track just to the north. There was a school many years ago, across the road, I am told.

It is no longer used as a church. I imagine that is why it is boarded up. Probably no priest to staff it.

I seem to recall that perhaps the rectory next door was or is being used for some historical purpose, like maybe it is open a few hours a week. It's been 5 years since I was last there, so my memory May be somewhat shaky here. There is a good sized cemetery there as well. My great grandparents are buried there, among others.

There is also a St. Hedwig's church in the city of Thorp itself. It is a much newer church. It was the "Polish" church in Thorp years ago, compared to St. Bernard's across town that was more the "German" church. But that distinction is probably 40 years old.
