Carleton, Aurilla (16 Sep 1831 - 25 Feb 1906)

Mrs. Aurilla Carleton died at the home of her daughter Mrs. C. Wightman in Pine Valley, Clark County, Feb. 25, 1906.

Deceased, whose maiden name was Aurilla Burgess, was born at Bangor, Maine, Sept. 16, 1831, being the daughter of Henry and Ruhuma Burgess. She was married to T.V. Carleton at Hingham, Sheboygan Co., Wis., July 4, 1849.

They came to Neillsville in 1871. Mr. Carleton died April 26, 1902, since which time deceased has continued to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Wightman. She leaves two brothers, William Burgess of Tony and Wingett Burgess of Sheboygan Co., also five children: Mrs. Ellen Moody of Withee, Henry who lived in York, Charles of this city, Clinton of Medford and Mrs. Nettie Wightman of Pine Valley.

She was a woman of rare excellence of character, a good wife and mother, and one of the kindest of neighbors, as the writer hereof can well testify. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, under whose auspices the funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, at the M.E. Church, Rev. W.P. Burrows officiating clergyman.

A CORRECTION

In the item last week headed "Mrs. Arrilla Carlton," which was copied from the Neillsville Times, there were several mistakes, to which our attention has been called in the following letter:

Withee, Wis., March 12, 1906

Mr. J. E. Noyes: I see in the Gleaner of 8th inst. A notice of my mother's death which is incorrect. I will give you the facts so you can correct it if you wish.

My father was Thomas V. Carleton, was born at Waldo, Waldo county, state of Maine, Jan. 14, 1820. He served through the Mexican war in Co. E, 2nd Mass., came to Sheboygan county, Wis., in 1849, where he was married to my mother, Miss Aurilla Burgess, July 4, 1849.

My mother was born at Glenburn, state of Maine, Sept. 16th 1830. They were both of Revolutionary stock. Father died three years ago. The children's names are Ellen Moody, Henry, Charles F., Clinton D. and Mrs. Nettie Weightman. - Ellen Moody
