Brooks, Jane E. (2 Oct 1833 - 23 May 1913)

Mrs. Brooks, who was stricken with paralysis several days previously, died at her home in this city, May 23, 1913.

Deceased, whose maiden name was Jane E. Colf, was born in Genesee Co., N.Y., Oct. 2, 1833. She moved with her parents to Ohio and there grew to womanhood. She was married to Alonzo E. Brooks Jun 4, 1854. The next year they moved to Carrol County, Ill. Jan. 1, 1860 they came to Neillsville, Clark County, and went at once to settle on their land near Lynn, Clark Co. Here, with pioneer courage and industry they developed a fine farm and home. In 1901 they sold the farm and moved to Neillsville to spend their declining years. Mr. Brooks died April 28, 1910. Two sons, George and Charles Brooks, are left to mourn the mother’s death. A daughter, Jennie, died in 1881.

Mrs. Brooks was a woman of the grand old type, kind hearted, helpful in all necessities of pioneer life, looking after the comfort and well being of her home and family and the "stranger who came within her gates".

To her the writer wishes to pay personal tribute. During the years he traveled over Clark County meeting and mingling with the people, in no home did he find a kindlier welcome than in the old farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks at Lynn. Her kindliness and gracious neighborliness made her loved and respected.

The funeral was held at the house Sunday afternoon, Rev. Prescott preaching the funeral sermon.

Burial took place in the family lot at the Lynn Cemetery.
