Winton, Hattie (1901? - 17 Augl 1914)

Hattie, aged 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Winton of the town of Hewett, Clark County, was drowned in Black River just below the Brameld cottage Monday afternoon.

Unknown to the parents the three Winton girls had gone to the river and went in bathing. They were playing around in the shallow water when suddenly Hattie and one of her sisters fell into a deep hole in the river. The cries of the girls attracted George Kopp, who was near by. He ran and plunged into the river and succeeded at great risk of his own life in saving one of the girls, but the other was drowned before he could save her. The neighbors came to assist in securing the body, which was found by Mr. Manzow. Dr. Matheson was summoned from Neillsville, but it was too late.

This is one of the saddest events that have happened in this locality. A bright and lovely little girl thus is taken in a moment from the home, leaves it desolate. The family has the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the home.
