Scott, Florence "Gertrude" (25 Aug. 1896 - 10 Sept. 1922)

Gertrude Scott Brought for Burial

Our people deeply regretted to learn of the sudden death of Miss Gertrude Scott, which occurred in Washington, D. C., where she had been working, on Monday morning, Sept. 11. She had been suffering from anemia for some time but was thought to be better. A letter from a friend to Gertrude’s father, Rev. W. T. Scott of Neillsville, about seven days before her death, revealed that Gertrude was not in fit condition for working and her brother, Earl, of this city, wired her to come at once, but a letter from her stated that she was not as bad as her friend had intimated and that she would be all right soon. The telegram to Earl on Monday was a hard blow. Her body arrived here yesterday noon and the funeral was held at the M. E. Church conducted by Rev. F. R. Harding. There was a large attendance of sorrowing relatives and friends, who came to cast a last look upon this fair, sweet maiden who had been taken away just in the bloom of youth. The five brothers and Donald M. Perry were pallbearers and Henry Sprester rendered a touching vocal solo. Rev. Harding gave a beautiful tribute to her young life, and Gertrude’s body was tenderly laid to rest in the family lot in Riverside cemetery. The remains of her mother, who passed away in Kilbourn about three years ago, and buried there, will be brought here later to rest in the same lot.

Florence Gertrude Scott was born in Fairfax, Minn., on August 25th, 1896, and has reached the age of 26 years and 18 days when the Angel of Death took her away. Gertrude came to this city with her parents and brothers when her father took charge of the M. E. parsonage here something like ten years ago. She attended our high school and graduated with the class of 1915. Later she took a course in the River Falls normal, from which she graduated in June, 1918. She taught for a while but resigned her position to enter war work for the government, serving in different departments. At the time of her death she was connected with the Treasury Department.

Gertrude was a bright young lady, loved by all who knew her. She was a sunny disposition, always having a smile for all. She endeared herself to a host of friends for her ever pleasant ways, all of whom will mourn her early demise.

Besides her father, she leaves fivers brothers: George L. of Colfax; C. Beecher and Earl of this city; Stafford of Gary, Ind., and Jesse of Neillsville. She also leaves a stepmother. All were in attendance at the funeral.

The Banner joins with many friends in extending sincere sympathy to the sorrowing ones. -Black River Falls Banner.
