Sitts, Henry (22 DEC 1830 - 4 Dec 1925)

Henry Sitts died at his home in this village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.), Friday, Dec. 4th, 1925, at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 12 days. The deceased had been in poor health for a number of years, but suffered a stroke a few days before his death, from which he did not rally.

He was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., on Dec. 22, 1830. In the year 1847 he came to Dodge County, Wis., where he was married to Elizabeth Kellogg on Oct. 6, 1864 and came to Clark County, Wis. on Oct. 11th of the same year. They located on a homestead two miles northeast of Loyal, which was then a wilderness. Mr. Sitts was a true pioneer and to him and some others of those early settlers who braved the dangers of pioneer life and who toiled to make homes, we owe this splendid section of the state.

He lived on the homestead for 45 years and then moved to the village where he has since lived.

His wife preceded him in death in 1918.

As far as we are able to learn, Mr. Sitts was the oldest inhabitant of Clark County.

The deceased was a kind, loving and faithful husband, father and neighbor, who will be mourned by all who knew him.

During his invalid years he has had as his constant attendant, his daughter, Mrs. Ellen Coon, who gave him the most faithful loving care.

He leaves to mourn his loss, one son, Charles Sitts of Wauzekee, Wis., five daughters, Mrs. Clara Arndt of Selfridge, N.D., Mrs. Ellen Coon and Mrs. Flora Draper of Loyal, Mrs. Anna Carey of Merrill and Mrs. Edna Coon of Greenwood, also seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held at the Methodist Church at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. J. James officiating. Interment was in the family lot at Pine Grove Cemetery.

(The following is a note about this obituary from DuWayne Hansen)

I noticed that "Stan" and "Audrey Roedl" posted obits on Henry
>> Sitts  on you wonderful website.
>> Having read them, I found it interesting that there is no mention
>> of Henry Sitts being married to a Cole daughter when he first lived
>> in  Dodge County, Wisconsin.  If I have the correct Henry Sitts,
>> he  married Cynthia J. Cole, daughter of Horace and Agnes Cole,
>> shortly  after he and the Coles moved to Dodge County.  He moved
>> there in 1847  and the Horace Cole family moved there in 1849.
>> Cynthia, however,  died at an early age in 1858; she was only 23
>> years old at the time.   According to the obit posted by Stan,
>> Henry Sitts married Elizabeth  Kellogg on October 6, 1864, and came
>> to Clark County on Oct. 11. of  the same year.  As you can see, all
>> of the dates work.
>>
>> I am wondering if you might have additional information on Henry
>> Sitts, especially about him before he came to Clark County.
>> Somewhere I read something that led me to believe that the the
>> Clark  County Henry Sitts was the same person who had a previous
>> marriage to  a Cole daughter in Dodge County.  I would be
>> interested in your  thoughts and would welcome (with glee!) any
>> additional information you  might have on hand.
>>
>> Thank you so much.  I am very impressed with the Clark County
>> websites for doing genealogical research!!!!!
