Bartsch Family, Oscar

Mr. Oscar Bartsch was born Oct. 9, 1900, to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bartsch Sr. His parents came to the U. S. from Germany in 1891, settling on a farm in the town of Fremont, Clark County, Wis., Section 32. There were four brothers and one sister. There was only a log house and a shed on the farm when his parents arrived, and in 1914 they built the barn. The house is still standing on the property.

Oscar was a young lad when his dad passed away, leaving him and his brothers and sister with their mother to run the farm. He received his education at the Franklin School until the age of 12, and the Lutheran Parochial School at Granton for three years.

Along with helping out on the farm he worked for Mr. Fred Hanke on the threshing machine during harvest and sawmill in winter months.

On May 29, 1923, Mr. Oscar Bartsch was married to Beatrice Renne of the town of Lynn. They farmed for awhile on the former Peter Schmitz farm. In 1928 a daughter, Margaret (now Mrs. Melvin Bandt) was born. In 1930 Mr. Oscar Bartsch moved to a house in Chili and started working for the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad as a section hand. In 1935 his niece, Evelyn Bartsch, came to live with them.

In 1937-1938, Oscar was transferred to Marshfield, working as a section hand and then came back to Chili and bought the home he is living in now.

He worked as relief foreman for the railroad for the railroad from 1945 until 1965 when he retired.

Oscar and his wife enjoy good health and also their four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They belong to Christ Lutheran Church in Chili and on May 29, 1973, they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
