Caliebe, Mabel Victoria (12 Feb. 1900 - 4 Aug. 1999)

Mabel Victoria Caliebe, age 99, of 6257 West Century Road, Greenwood, Wis., passed away in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999 at 3:35 a.m.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 6, 1999 at 11a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Greenwood with Reverend Terri Blomberg officiating. Inurnment was in the Greenwood Cemetery. Honorary pall bears were grandsons: Jim Caliebe, Kurt Caliebe, Bob Caliebe, and great -grandsons: Jeff Miller and Eric Miller.

Mabel was born on Feb. 12, 1900 in Fergus Falls, Minn., the sixth of Swaen and Hanna (Farup) Benson. There were 13 children born to the Bensons. At the age of 6, Mabel’s family moved to Niagara, North Dakota. Mabel was in the second class of graduate from Petersburg High School, in North Dakota and was the class Salutatorian. Following graduation, Mabel taught school in the Niagara area for three years. During this time, she met her husband, George, and on Oct. 4, 1921, the young couple eloped to Marquette, Mich. And were united in marriage. During her marriage, Mabel attended UW Eau Claire to further her education. She taught school in Greenwood area for 20 years. In 1962, George became ill and Mabel retired to care for him. The couple began raising feeder pigs which became a worthwhile enterprise in which they took great pride. George passed away on Dec. 29, 1982 at the age of 92. They celebrated 61 years together. Mabel continued to live in their home until entering the hospital on June 27th of this year. Mabel was a very special lady who loved to travel and greatly enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, WELCA and the Greenwood Area Homemaker’s group. She was active in these groups into her late 80’s. Mabel was a member of Our Saviors’ Lutheran Church in Greenwood where she taught Sunday School for many years. When asked how she would like to be remembered, she simply replied, "That I like people and people liked me."

She will be sadly missed by her daughters: Grace Caliebe of Greenwood and Verna Grabler of Greenfield, Wis., and her son Earl (Shirley) Caliebe of Greenwood; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild expected in March.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and 12 siblings.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. A memorial in Mabel’s name will be established at a later date.

Kristin Cuddie, funeral director, is assisting the family with arrangements.
