Lived Here Sixty - Two Years

H. M. Root was a caller in the Press office Monday, Oct. 12 and recalled the fact that 62 years ago that day, Oct. 12, 1869, he left his home in New York state to come west. After several weeks of adventure along the Mississippi River south of St. Louis, he came north, reaching the present site of Greenwood in December of the same year and found employment in a logging camp.

For 19 winters he worked in lumber camps and followed the log drives in the spring. For some time he war engaged quite extensively in logging on his own account and in partnership with B. F. Thompson. In 1888 Mr. Root was elected county clerk and served eight years remaining in Neillsville ever since. He is still hale and hearty.
