Oakfield Man Killed Sunday

William Schmidt Gets in Line of Fire During Drive in Marsh

Dies Short Time Later

Neillsville - - The first casualty reported in this area for the 1949 deer season occurred yesterday morning.

William F. Schmidt, 52, Oakfield, was accidentally shot about 8:34 a.m. A guest at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Louis *Worchell, Town of Seif, Schmidt had left the house early, joining a drive planned by other members of the party.

The tragedy took place in the Town of Foster. Schmidt occupied a station across a marsh and waited as the rest of the party drove towards him. However, the drivers were not aware of Schmidt's position, and when three deer were flushed they began firing.

IN LINE OF FIRE

As the noise of the shots died Schmidt was seen in the line of fire, calling for help. When the others reached him, they found that at bullet had passed through his lower ribs on the left side and emerged on his right side.

Schmidt lived until he was carried out to a road, but died at about 10 o'clock. An ambulance from Neillsville Hospital took the body to the Cole Funeral Home. Later in the afternoon, it was taken to Oakfield.
