Dornfeld, Martin W. (Jan. 23, 1910-Oct. 24, 1943)
Martin W. Dornfeld, 33, a doctor of chiropractic here for the past three years, drowned at Half Moon Lake near Mosinee late Sunday afternoon when his boat capsized as he and Mrs. Dornfeld were attempting to land a large fish which he had caught.
Mrs. Dornfeld succeeded in keeping afloat until occupants of a nearby cottage came to the rescue, but Dr. Dornfeld sank beneath the surface before help arrived.
Both were able to swim and the boat was near the shore when overturned, but their clothing and the coldness of the water handicapped their efforts to save themselves. The body of Dr. Dornfeld was recovered about two hours after the tragedy.
Dr. and Mrs. Dornfeld were spending the weekend at their cottage on the lake shore.
Dr. Dornfeld came here in 1940 to establish a chiropractic practice and opened an office on Nov. 4 of that year. Born at Marshall, Wis., on Jan. 23, 1910, he was brother of the Rev. A.C. Dornfeld (see pg. 2) of this city.
He attended the Lutheran parochial school at Marshall and St. John’s and St. Mark’s Parochial Schools at Watertown. He also attended the Northwestern College at Watertown and the Theological Seminary at Thiensville, graduating from the latter in June, 1934.
He entered the ministry at Manistique, Mich., in March, 1936, and was married to Miss Myrna Albrecht at Hustisford, Wis., on June 4, 1936.
After a short period in the ministry he resigned his pastorate and entered the Lincoln Chiropractic College at Indianapolis, graduating on March 30, 1940. In the summer of 1940 he took post graduate work at the National College of Drugless Physicians, and also practiced in Indianapolis before coming here.
He was secretary of the Northwest District of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association, a member of the Executive Committee of Lincoln College, and a member of the Board of Education of National College.
Surviving relatives, in addition to his wife, are his father, the Rev. Emil Dornfeld, Watertown; a sister, Mrs. I.G. Uetzmann, Watertown; and two brothers, the Rev. A.C. Dornfeld of Marshfield, and the Rev. A.G. Dornfeld of Fox Lake. His mother and one sister preceded him in death.
The body will lie in state at the Rembs Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, when rites will be held there for members of the family. From there services will be conducted at that time by the Rev. Adolph Schuler of Neillsville. Interment will be made on Thursday at Watertown with the Rev. William of Watertown officiating.
