Neillsville UCC Pastor Clark Leaving (1984)

Congregation members and others in the Neillsville community expressed sadness this week after the announcement that Gary Clark of the United Church of Christ had tendered his resignation. The last Sunday service in Neillsville for Pastor Clark is scheduled for May 27.

Rev. Clark has accepted a pastoral post with Zion United /church of Christ in Sheboygan. The Neillsville church board is now in the process of seeking a replacement for Clark.

The move for Clark is a step up in church size. Neillsville’s UCC congregation is approximately 525. Zion’s present congregation is at 800-plus. The Zion church is also a two pastor operation; Clark will be the senior minister. (Zion has played a major role in the UCC denomination through its many years as a congregation and its association with Lakeland College, which is a UCC-affiliated educational facility.)

Kansas-native Clark and his family came to Neillsville in June of 1972 after a three-year stint in Whitehall. Under his direction, the Neillsville UCC grew in both congregational size and community involvement.

While in Neillsville, Clark was active in numerous religious and secular organizations. He took an active role in the Neillsville Ministerial Association. He also served on the board of directors for the Tufts Museum and the Neillsville Country Club. He was also instrumental in the creation of a food pantry for low income citizens and served on numerous other committees benefiting the community and area. His hobbies and friendships included those he made as a licensed private pilot and as a golfer.

Clark and his wife Martha, and their three children, Scott, Joe and Amy, now reside at Sunset Place in Neillsville. Prior to moving into the city several years ago, the Clarks operated a farmette northeast of Neillsville and raised purebred horses as an avocation.
