Strangfeld, Lucas Joseph (19 April 1861 - 19 July 1934)

Lucas Joseph Strangfeld was born in Prussia, Germany, April 19, 1861. He reached the age of 73 years and 3 months. He lived in Germany 20 years. In 1881 he came to Cleveland, Ohio, and worked on a farm 2 ½ years. Then from time to time he worked at various jobs in Illinois, St. Louis, Mo., Kansas, Michigan and New York. He then returned to Germany to attend his mother’s funeral remaining there 1 ½ years. In 1887 he returned to this country coming first to Milwaukee; later working in Denver, Colo., Utah, and working as a porter in the Harrison house at La Salle, Ill. He also worked as a porter in hotels in Omaha, Neb. and Denver. He also worked in factories and was coal shoveler on a steamboat from some time. In 1897 he was married to Caroline Helen Schepp at La Salle, Ill. They then moved to Wisconsin settling in the town of Washburn which was their home for 18 years. In 1912 he moved with his family to Plainfield living there 2 years. In 1914 he moved back to his farm in the town of Weston which has been his home since. He was always helpful both in his home and community. Until the last few months when his failing health took him from his many duties. He was taken to Madison to the hospital July 10 for examination which revealed a cancerous tumor. He submitted to an operation July 17 which developed into bronchial pneumonia. He passed away July 10 at 7:20 a.m. Joe Strangfeld accompanied him to Madison and was at his bedside constantly. Early Wednesday morning his wife accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Strangfeld of Neillsville drove to Madison to be at his bedside. His son Frank and Mrs. N. Busgen and son Edward of La Salle, Ill., where also there at the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and 7 children: Joe, York; Frank of La Salle; John and Peter, Pine Valley; Elizabeth, Mrs. Dick Ableiter of Neillsville; Kathryn, Mrs. Gilbert Gibean of Rouyn, Quebec, Canada; William at home. Also one brother Henry who lived with him on the farm. Also five grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church Monday, July 23, at 9 a.m. Rev. P. Weber, officiating. Burial took place in the Catholic Cemetery.
