Sidney Free, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Free, was born January 13, 1887, at Weston, Wisconsin.

When he about six years of age he moved with his parents to the Town of York which has since been his home, except for those times when he was working out or spent in the army.

On the 21st of October, 1918, he left for the U. S. Army Training Camps, where he was in service at Camp Jefferson Barracks, Shelby, and Grant. He accrued his Honorable Discharge from the army while at Camp Grant, arriving home December 31, 1918.

The following years were spent at home. During the early months of the fall of 1931, Mr. Free noticed an ailment which he attributed to defective teeth. Medical examination suggested a cancerous affliction. A first operation was undergone at a hospital at Eau Claire. During the early spring aid was secured from the government hospital service and on March 5th Mr. Free went to Milwaukee. He was sent immediately to the Veterans Hospital in Heinz, Illinois. After four weeks at this hospital he returned home, but soon the disease again became apparent and about a month ago he returned to the Veterans Hospital for further treatment. In spite of all that the best of medical skill could do, he answered the last Roll Call June 30, 1932.

Mr. Free is survived by the following immediate relatives who mourn his passing from their midst: his mother, Mrs. Richard Free of Neillsville; four sisters, Ethel, Mrs. John Darger of Sioux Falls S. D., Gertrude, Mrs. Harry Burke of Fresno, California, Lucy, Mrs. Horace Lawrence of York; and Jennie Davis who lived with him on the home place; one brother, Herbert, of York; and a number of other relatives and friends. His father and one sister, Phoebe, have preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held in the York Center M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon July 6th, the Rev. W. N. Grandy officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. The services at the grave were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 175, and the I. O. O. F.
