I believe this view of the "main street" faces slightly southeast with the school on the hill at the distant center.

George Washington Taylor (son of Nehemiah B.) was my great grand father who lived in Humbird or the Humbird area (Alma center for awhile) from 1865 until 1931. He is buried in the Humbird cemetery. I was in Humbird a few years ago, and was sad to see the school in this picture, almost completely torn down, with only parts of some walls then still standing, by now it must be all gone. I felt a certain sadness when I saw this picture. I'm interested in information on Taylor, Hakes, or Wheeler families.

Dear Ms. Marianne

My former foster dad, Craig Adams helped tear down the school in the early 90s and I watched him when I was a toddler but barely remember, and he went to school their in the 60s and 70s please write back.

I am researching my family tree so Humbird comes into the picture for me as my great grand father George Washington Taylor related to Washburn's, young, Jennings, Markham, and others in the Humbird area. Only relatives left far as i know anymore around Humbird are Washburn decedents. Asa Taylor my dad's dad George's son went to school there maybe that school they walked from Hickman road to school in Humbird i think. George's son Asa moved to Green Valley TWP around 1913 & famed there and is buried at Halder, Wisconsin. George is buried there at Humbird died 1938. I was in Humbird some years ago seeing George and Nancy Graves, just was checking out the town getting Cemetery info. etc. etc.

Hello, I'm trying to find info. on my great-grandfather, David M. (possibly Miller) Taylor. The info. I have is that he was born in 1859 in Wisconsin. Some of this info. may be inaccurate, so I'm exploring all options. I know David emigrated to New Brunswick later. Do you have any info. on Malcolm David Taylor, or David Malcolm Taylor, Nehemiah and Elizabeth Miller's son? For example, where he died, etc. That way I can eliminate or include him in my queries. Thank you.

Message #: 1577 Date Posted: 03-04-2002 Subject: Taylor, Nehemiah B. (Sep 1819 - 15 JUL 1909) Surnames: HICKS SMITH TAYLOR TRAVIS WHITBECK

NEHEMIAH B. TAYLOR The son of James and Charlotte (Smith) Taylor BORN: -- SEP. 1819 MARR: 17 SEP. 1843 DIED: 15 JUL. 1909 SPOU: LUCY HICKS BORN: (N.Y..)-- 1827 DIED: -- . 1850 (SECOND WIFE) BORN: 04 FEB. 1821 MARR: 12 JUL. 1852 DIED: 27 AUG. 1902

JAMES W. TAYLOR (Nehemiahs father) was born 1780/1790 married Nancy Charlotte Smith & was in the war of 1812, (marker on his grave at Westfield, Ohio) died January 21 1859 and found on the 1840 census in Delaware county (Marlbor twp) Living beside David Smith. It is not known if James came to America with his parents as a young child, or if he was already grown and came by himself. We do know that he married in America and that his wife was born in New York State. James May have had a son born CA. 1817, Nehemiah born. 1819, another son CA. 1821, and 4. ? and 5. ? and 6th a daughter born CA. 1830/1835! John M born March 1780, died October 14 1855 and William Taylor Born march 1780 died October 14th 1855 age 75 years 7 mo.'s also buried in the Westfield Cemetery, May be brothers of James, both are sons of D. H. & G. M.

NANCY CHARLOTTE SMITH'S family was prominent in Delaware county Ohio from 1840 (census) through the 1850's (Quite a bit of information is also known for the Smith family).

NEHEMIAH was born in Ohio, and his father was born in Scotland (according to Nehemiah's California death record), and his father May have been in Hagerstown, Maryland, and possibly from Maine before that (sea port town). Nehemiah's son George told his grandchildren the family came from Virginia!. The earliest information found for Nehemiah is when he married his first wife, Lucy M. Hicks daughter of Nathaniel Hamilton Hicks and Margaret Whitbeck, in what was then Northern Delaware County, Ohio, at Westfield (married by: A. Patee "at Westfield") which later became part of Morrow County. By this marriage, two children were born:

A.....SAMANTHA J. TAYLOR born in 1846, Ohio.(Lived at Colby, Wisconsin-in 1865 maybe earlier).

B.....GEORGE WASHINGTON TAYLOR, born on the fourth of February 1848 in Sandsuky (death certificate) Ohio.

The family is listed on the 1850 morrow county, Ohio Census. Lucy died about 1851 (probably in childbirth). Nehemiah married his second wife, Betsey Ann Miller, in the town of Westfield in Morrow County. She was born in Windsor, in Broome County, New York. Betsey was previously married August 5, 1838, to Joshua Travis and had five children by that marriage: Henry Hamlet, born 1839, and Jane Ann, born 1849 were living with Nehemiah and Betsey on the 1855 and 1860 censuses in Sauk County, Wisconsin.

In 1880, Henry (Betsey's son) was living in Marathon County in Mosinee, Wisconsin as a laborer and was married to V.A. Getchal, 33 years old. She was born in Maine, her father was born in Maine, and her mother was born in New Hampshire. Henry's wife had a brother, Frank, born in 1853 in Wisconsin. Hamlet's children are: Manniss, Elnaxa, Gavin Bert, Arthur, Willie, and Leon. Hamlet was living in Hancock, Wisconsin in 1902 and was the only living child from Betsey's previous marriage at that time. Henry for awhile-used the name "Henry Taylor" while in the U.S. Navy in the early 1860's. One of our ancestors is reported to have been in one of the wars as a water boy. This May have been Nehemiah's father, in the war of 1812, with the British..

Nehemiah left Morrow County, Ohio, and came to Marston, in Washington Township (then Northern Sauk County), Sauk County, Wisconsin, about April of 1853. His family traveled by wagon, with the Felt E. Wheeler and sons, Nelson, Almon, henry and John and other families. One of the wheeler families continued on West to California, while Nehemiah and Felt E Wheeler and his other children traveled into Sauk county Wisconsin. In 1860, Nehemiah lived in Washington Township in Sandusky (Hillpoint). The post office was in "Humbolt," where they lived at least until 1863.

Nehemiah came to Clark county in the fall of 1865 as stated by him in his letter, telling about his step son's health (to pension department). Nehemiah's family lived near Loyal in 1869, in Loyal Township Clark County Wisconsin, where Nehemiah was farming. The value of his personal estate was 400.00 and his total estate was worth 600.00. In 1878, Nehemiah homesteaded 160 acres of land in Township 26, section 22, just a little east and south of Loyal. On the 1850 Morrow County census, Betsey is listed with John (Festien ) and Elizabeth (probably Betsey's mother) and Betsey's daughter, Jane Ann. She probably lived at home with her mother after her first husband, Joshua Travis, died, but before she married Nehemiah.

In 1874, Nehemiah's wife "Betsey" left him and moved to Colby, Wisconsin, where she is described as a pioneer settler. In 1880, Betsey and her daughter, Nancy, were in Colby along with Betsey's Grandson, Clarence Andrews, first son of Nehemiah and Betsey's first daughter, Henrietta, who was then nine years old. Betsey took in washing to support herself and lived on Main Street. She died on August 27, 1902, and is buried in Colby, Wisconsin.

By 1880, Nehemiah lived in Jackson County, near Alma Center, with his daughter, Samantha, his son George, George's wife Nancy, and their daughter, Mary. They lived there until about 1894 and were near Humbird, Wisconsin in Clark County in 1895. In 1900, Nehemiah was living with Henry Young, son of Chauncy Young. Nehemiah's son George hated Nehemiah (According to the family) and the family states that he was a scoundrel.

Some of Nehemiah's siblings May be Martha, Catherine and William. NEHEMIAH and BETSEY'S CHILDREN are as follows: (2nd marriage) A. Henrietta Born: -- 1853 B. Henry L. Born: 14 May 1855 C. James B. Born: Jul/Aug 1858 D. Malcom David Born: -- May 1860 E. Nancy Charlotte Born: 16 Jan 1863.
