BENDER, VIOLET (MRS. HAROLD)

In October of 1919, the Bert Walker family moved from a farm in the Town of Hoard to the farm 1/4 mile north of the York Dairy Cheese Factory. It is just off County Trunk K.

We didn't go to church in those early years but I remember when I was about eleven, the Peaslee family, who lived just south of us, would take my sister, Ethyl and me along to church and Sunday School at York Center.

It was during the pastorate of the Rev' Chapman,' about 1935, 1 think, that my mother, Ethyl, and I joined the church. Ethyl and I were members of the Epworth League for several years. Mother served as Sunday School Superintendent and also sang with others'at several funerals.

Harold Bender and I were married in the church by Rev. Lee Holmes and we were members there until moving to Owen in 1975. My children, Janet and Philip were also members. They enjoyed M.Y.F. and at one time, along with my father, mowed the cemetery and lawns.

Janet and her son Henry live in Libertyville, Illinois and are active members of the United Methodist church there. Janet's husband died in 1974.

Philip and his wife, Lucille, live in Chicago. Our daughter, Ruth, and Thomas Strey were married in 1964 by Rev. Paul Doering in the church. They live in Owen and have two children, Lorri and Tommy.

Since moving to Owen I have joined the United Church of Christ there. Still, the York Center Church remains very dear to me with its memories of family and old friends.
