Jerard, Henry V. (30 Jul 1836 - 1 Jan 1897)

One by one the old settlers are passing away. On Friday last, Jan. 1, 1897, Henry Vincent Jerard, a resident of the town of Thorp, Clark County, Wis. since 1879, died at his home south of Eidsvold. He had been quite ill for the past six weeks, but, we learn, suffered little pain. Mr. Jerard was born in Wilmer township, Herkimer Co., N.Y., July 30, 1836. Before the war he sailed on the lakes for several years, after which he went to Branch, Co., Mich. He was a soldier in the late war, in Co. G. Ninth Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the battle of Murfreesborough  (Murfreesboro), where he was captured and taken to Winchester, Tenn., but was paroled. After the war he returned to Jefferson, Co., N.Y., and the following spring resumed sailing on the lakes. In the fall of 1876 he came to Juneau Co., Wis., and in 1878 to this county, and settled on his present farm the following spring. He was married Aug. 13, 1863 to Hester A. Wright, who with one daughter, Mrs. Martello Warner, survive him. Another daughter, Mrs. Jerome B. Calkins, died on Jan. 16, 1889, aged 22 years. He was town clerk in the year 1880. The funeral occurred at Eidsvold on Sunday last.
