The county board evidently made a great mistake at its annual meeting, last week, in making an insufficient appropriation for county expenses for the coming year. The total appropriation for county purposes is $16,000, $6,600 of which is for roads in the various towns, leaving but $9,400 for all other county expenses. The principal items of such expenses are as follows: Salaries $4,000, Circuit court expenses $2,500, Printing, Stationery and Blank books, $3,000. These items alone exceed by $100 the total appropriation for all expenses, leaving sheriff’s fees, printer’s accounts, poor farm expenses and miscellaneous expenses of all kinds unprovided for. To be sure, there is a balance of about $3,000 to begin on, and there will be some returns for county printing from the tax sale, but taking into consideration the large delinquent list, there is little hope of the funds holding out and the indications are the county orders will go begging for a redeemer again next fall.

(Vickie’s note - according to the website "The Inflation Calculator"

What cost $16000 in 1880 would cost $296810.38 in 2002.)
