Cook, Lauretta (30 May 1819 - 2 Feb 1914)

Word has been received that Mrs. Lauretta Cook known here as Grandma Cook, passed to the beyond Feb. 2, 1914 at Oakland, Oregon.

She was born in 1819 and if she had lived until May 30th would have been ninety-five years old. She lived in this village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.) about 30 years and two years ago went to Oakland, where she has since resided.

None ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of a genuine hospitality, so characteristic of the people of her ancestry. Disease did not destroy the charm of a kind indulgent disposition, nor old age diminish her unselfish solicitude for her friends and loved ones.

Lauretta Clark WAS BORN NEAR Hinesburg, Vermont, May 30, 1819. At the age of 15 she moved with her parents to Ohio. Some years later they moved to Sheboygan Co., Wis. At the age of 32 she was married to Allen Cook, who died 21 years later.

In 1881 "Grandma Cook" moved with her family to Loyal, Clark County, Wis., remaining there until a year last May, at which time she came with her daughter, Mrs. Lovina Mabie, to Oakland Oregon.

She was the mother of five children, three of who are still living, Lovina Mabie and William E. Cook of Oakland, and Harrison C. Cook of Junction City, Oregon; also a step-daughter, Alice Coolridge of Minneapolis, Minn.. There are also ten grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren living. When only a girl she was united with the Disciples' Church, which views she held until about five years ago when she accepted the views of the Seventh Day Adventists.

Grandma Cook has been in poor health for four or five years, but of late, although she had been ill, she was not considered seriously ill, so her death came as a shock. She passed away at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 1914, at the age of 94 years, 8 months and two days, being the last member of her father's family.

The funeral was held at the home of her son, W. E. Cook, Tuesday, Feb. 3, at noon, conducted by Rev. S. C. C. Hickman. Interment was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Oakland (Oakland Advance)
