OWEN -- It May sound absurd but stamp collectors from around the world know
about the 1983 Farm Progress Days which began today.
It's not that the show itself has a great international appeal, but rather a
special feature of the show that's sparked their attention.
That feature is a special Postal cancellation mark that will be used on mail
deposited at the postal substation at the FPD site.
Approximately 100 people from around the country and world have sent postcards
and letters with stamps to Owen Postmaster Dorothy Bjornstad. She'll cancel the
stamps and mail them back.
In addition to the special mark, the postal substation will be selling stamps
saluting volunteerism. Bjornstad said she thought the stamp was especially
appropriate because the role volunteers have played in getting ready for FPD.
The special cancellation mark and substation had to be approved by the post
Office's central region office in Chicago. FPD visitors will be able to Take
advantage of all normal postal services at the substation except getting mail
orders.
