Obituary of Alvin Carl August Schutte

Alvin Schutte, age 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Memorial Nursing Home in Neillsville, where he had resided for the past two years.

He was born on January 15, 1914 in Neillsville to John and Dorothea (Bowles) Schutte. He attended St. John's German Lutheran School, Neillsville. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Before marriage, Alvin worked for a brief time in the circus out west, then was employed at the Frank Marg Fox Farm. Alvin married Ethel Durst on June 26, 1935 at St. John's parsonage, Neillsville. After marriage they were both employed at Frank Marg's until the spring of 1938. He then farmed 5 miles south of Neillsville on Highway 95 and lived on three different farms one quarter mile apart for the rest of his life.

In the early 40s he picked apples at Ski-Hi in Baraboo. He drove truck for Plautz Bros. Gravel and also worked for the Clark Co. Highway Dept. Alvin also drove school bus for many years. From 1940 - 1956 Alvin raised mink and processed mink feed for many local fur farmers. He then worked for Fullerton Lumber and drove cement truck.

He served as Town Clerk starting in 1947 and also served on the Levis Town Board as Chairman. Alvin also served on the first committee for the Neillsville Rural Fire Dept. and Ambulance Service.

Alvin is survived by three sons: Don (Evelyn) Schutte, Neillsville; Marvin (Marie) Schutte, Withee; and Daryl (Nancy) Schutte, Beloit; three daughters: Janice (Rolland) Stenulson, Neillsville; Dianne Buettner, Neillsville; and Joanne (Ray Kittell) St. John, Port Edwards; 25 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Alvin was preceded in death by his wife Ethel on Jan. 20, 1998; one son-in-law, Bill Buettner; his parents; five brothers: John, Martin, Henry, Robert, and Martin's twin brother who died at birth; two sisters: Senta (Christman) Schutte; and Doris (Christianson) Schutte.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neillsville, with the Rev. Timothy Biebert officiating. Pallbearers were Ted Mejia, Jerry Irwin, Clifford Stenulson, Bill Buettner, and John and Irv Schutte. Music was provided by organist Sharon Nemitz and soloist Melvin Nemitz. Burial was in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Buchanan Funeral Home, Neillsville, assisted the family with arrangements.
