Twelve women, including her live-in nurse, attended, among them her neighbors of the farming community who also have retired and live in Loyal.

Mrs. Smith, the former Gertrude Baker, was born November 27, 1888 to Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth) Baker on the parental farm at Lowell in Dodge County. After graduation from Beaver Dam High School, she attended Milwaukee State Teachers College and began a teaching career but continued attending summer school sessions.

Following the bridegroom's return from military service overseas during World War I, she and Chester M. Smith were married June 9, 1920 in Milwaukee.

Their daughter, Mrs. Salter (LaVonne) Joyce, had spent considerable time in Loyal this summer following Mr. Smith's illness and confinement at Marshfield Convalescent Center. She returned to Dayton, Ohio, when her husband had a heart attack and double bypass surgery. There are two grandchildren.

The Smiths spent most of their married life on a farm west of Loyal until retiring to their present home in Loyal. They are members of the Loyal United Methodist Church and affiliated organizations.
