Evelyn J. Matson

Evelyn Matson, age 90, of Black River Falls, formerly of Neillsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Black River Memorial Hospital in Black River Falls.

Evelyn Jane Matson was born on July 5, 1913, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Gustave M. and Alzada M. (Eddy) Ericson. She attended schools in Rush City and Duluth, Minn., and then attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Duluth, Minn. and graduated as a registered nurse. Evelyn was united in marriage to Meric V. Overman on October 13, 1936. Meric died on December 17, 1966 and Evelyn later married Willard A. Matson on December 17, 1966 in Minneapolis. She had a brief nursing career but worked mostly as a housewife, raising her family. She lived in Neillsville for 50 years before moving to Spring Park, Minn. in 1993. In 2001, they moved to Black River Falls.

Evelyn volunteered as chairman of the Red Cross Bloodmobile for many years.

She is survived by three children, Kathleen J. Johnson of Neillsville, Jerry V. (Lynn) Overman of Black River Falls, and Thomas E. (Sharon) Overman of Salome, Ariz. She is further survived by seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Meric V. Overman, and a son-in-law, Donald Johnson.

Funeral services for Evelyn were held Dec. 20 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Pastor James Gordon officiated. Interment was in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Casket Bearers were Justin Drangstveit, Matthew Johnson, Peter Johnson, Meric Overman, and Kurt Overman.

The Gesche Funeral Home assisted Evelyn’s family with arrangements.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Neillsville. The Rev. James Gordon officiated. Music was provided by Mary Heineck, soloist, and Jodi Rueth, organist. Burial was in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Justin Drangstveit, Matthew Johnson, Peter Johnson, Meric Overman, and Kurt Overman.
