Kintzele, Harlan (Retirement - 1972)

After 51 years of activity as a circuit court reporter Harlan Kintzele of Neillsville retired Monday.

His position has been assumed by Milton Johnson, who comes to Neillsville from a position with the state parole board. A native of Minnesota, Mr. Johnson has had experience as a court reporter in Michigan and Wisconsin. He has been in the state for the last 10 years.

Mr. Johnson’s appointment was made by Judge Lowell D. Schoengarth, in whose court he will serve. He is married and the father of two children, Eddie, 11, and Caroline, nine. The family plans to move to Neillsville about June 1. They have rented a house at 1012 Hewett Street.

Mr. Kintzele’s career has been marked by court work at a number of widely-publicized trials during his half-century of service as a circuit court reporter. The high point in his recollection, however, was a trial in Sauk County involving the murder of a county officer. This case took the longest of any criminal action in Wisconsin history to try. The Hon. Bruce F. Beilfuss, now a justice of the state supreme court, presided at this trial.

During his long career, Mr. Kintzele has served under five circuit judges. He started as an assistant to Mrs. Hazel Brown in the court of Judge Emery W. Crosby here, and then moved to Appleton, where he spent four years with Judge Edgar Werner. He served briefly under Judge Alvin M. Reese in Madison, and then returned to Clark County to serve under Judge Crosby. When he was elected following Judge Crosby’s death, Judge Beilfuss appointed him circuit court reporter; and Judge Lowell D. Schoengarth renewed the appointment when he succeeded Judge Beilfuss to the circuit court bench.
