Scheffler, Bernice L. (7 JUL 1926 - 8 SEP 2005)

Bernice Lillian Scheffler, 79, Athens, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens. Burial was in the Athens Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Donn Radde officiated. Pallbearers were Shawn Weiler, Brad Luetschwager, Bob Scheffler, Virgil Weiler, Adnay Luetschwager, and Mike Verpoorten.

Bernice Lillian Behrend was born July 7, 1926, in the town of Johnson, Marathon County, to Walter and Dora (nee Stargardt) Behrend. She attended Trinity Lutheran School in Athens and graduated from Athens High School in 1944. She worked as a teletype operator in Spokane, Wash., for two years. She married Kenneth W. Scheffler at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, on Oct. 8, 1949. They farmed in the town of Johnson until 1983, then moved to the village of Athens. She enjoyed spending summers at their cottage inn Eagle River, crossword puzzles and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a 50-year member of the Johnson Homemakers.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Scheffler, Athens; her children, Judy (Virgil) Weiler, Athens, Nancy (Adnay) Luetschwager, Athens, Randy (Sheila) Scheffler, Athens, and Sandy (Mike) Verpoorten, Athens; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ray Behrend, White Oak, Texas.
