Longwood Pioneer Resident Dies at 81

Christian A. Backe, age 81, retired Longwood Township pioneer farmer died at 1:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 15th, 1980 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where he was admitted Feb 27th, 1980.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 19th, 1980 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee, with Rev. Peter Thomsen officiating. Burial services were held at Riverside Cemetery, Withee. The Maurina Funeral Home in Owen, provided the funeral arrangements.

Christian "Chris" Backe was born at Holmestran, Norway on November 10th, 1889. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1906, when he moved to the village of Withee.

He was united in marriage with the former Isabelle Ward, on October 22, 1934. He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church of Withee.

He is survived by his wife; one son, John of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. David (Joan) Edgington of Bayside; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Rogers of Blue River and Mrs. Roy (Tillie) Walters of Wauwatosa. A brother, Arnt, and a sister Margaret preceeded him in death.
