I’m researching my great grandparents Joseph and Anna Skerven. They had a farm in Holton WI. I know she passed away March 29, 1901 but I can’t find any record for him. I’m hoping that you might have some information. I did find a mention of her at the Dorchester Cemetery. They had her last name misspelled as Skrvan but I’m pretty sure it’s her. I’d appreciate any help or can give me. Glenn and Julie Skerven, 3940 S Prairie Hill Lane Apt. 304, Greenfield, WI 53228

I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Joseph Charles Skerven 1844 – ?, his wife Anna Matiofsky Skerven 1844 - 1901 , and their daughter, Rose Skerven ? – ?, primarily their death dates, where they are buried, and if they have gravestones.

Here is what I have so far:

1.  Joseph Charles Skerven 1844 – ? before June 1900 (not true, see #5 below)

Joseph Charles Skerven was born in July 1844 in Bohemia or Austria Germany

My cousin, Joan Benner, has done quite a bit of digging through records in Bohemia and cannot pinpoint any town or area he was born in, or find his parents.  Trusting her work, I have not attempted to do any more digging on this.

2.  Joseph immigrated to America in 1878 with his wife, Anna, and children Nickolas and possibly Rose.

3.  They settled in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin.  Joseph was a farmer.

4.  I have a copy of the 1885 census from Holton township, which includes Joseph’s household as having 2 males and 2 females, which would be Joseph, Anna, Nickolas and Rose.

5.  I have a copy of the 1900 census from Holton township, which includes Joseph Skervin, 56, wife Anna, 56, sons Nick (Nickolas), 27, Joseph, 13, and grandson Joseph Donez, 20.  Both son Joseph and grandson Joseph were born in Wisconsin.  The others in Austria Germany.  Family lore has it that Joseph Sr. died prior to this census being taken in June 1900, but he does show up in the 1900 census.

6.  I have searched deaths in Wisconsin and cannot find a death record for Joseph Skerven born 1844.  As you can see we have several Joseph Skerven’s in our line which show up, but not him.  He had spent all his time in Holton, so I am reasonably certain he would not have died in another state, and would have been brought back to Wisconsin for burial.

7.  Anna Matiofsky Skerven was born in January 1844 in Bohemia or Austria Germany.

8.  Joseph and Anna were married in 1865 in Bohemia.

9.  Anna immigrated to America in 1878 with her husband and children, as noted in #2 above.

10.  They settled in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin.

11.  The 1885 and 1900 census confirms they were in Holton during those years.

12.  Anna died 22 March 1901 in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin.

12.   I found a brief obituary from the Clark County Wisconsin History and Genealogy Society, which I printed 5/1/2019.  It says it is from the Dorchester Reporter 3/29/1901.  “Skrvan, Anna (1845? – 22 MAR 1901)  Died, Mrs. Anna Skrvan, at the age of 55 years, last Friday, of Chronic Brights Disease.  The funeral services were held Sunday at the Catholic Church, Rev. Aug. Birsner officiating.  The remain was interred in the St. Louis Cemetery.”  I have searched in both Clark and Marathon counties to find any additional information, using several spellings of the last name, Skerven, Skervin, and Skrvan.  I cannot find any record of a burial.  I could not find a St. Louis Cemetery.  Perhaps it has been renamed?

13 Rose Skerven remains a mystery.

14.  I think she was born in Bohemia after Nickolas in December 1874, but could have been born before him.

15.  I think she immigrated with the family in 1878.

16.  She is included on the 1885 census.  See #4 above.

16.  I can find no record of her death.  She is not on the 1900 census.  I cannot find any death records, obituaries, or cemetery records.  I do have a note that my mother, Kay Isaacson, wrote in 1993 which says “Joseph Charles Skerven’s {1887-1954} mother died {1901} when he was 13 years old.  a sister Rose died when she was very young.”  I added the bracketed information to make it a little clearer.
