Philippi, Catherine (28 MAY 1853 - 25 JUL 1912)

Mrs. John Philippi, who received a stroke of paralysis about ten o’clock last Thursday forenoon, July 25th, 1912, mention of which was made in this paper last week, died at six o’clock the same day without regaining consciousness, aged 59 years, 1 month and 26 days.

Catherine Baer was born in Germany, May 28th, 1853, and came to this country with her parents when about three years of age. She was married to John Philippi, Jan. 7th, 1868, at St. John, Wis. About thirty-eight years ago the family moved to Mosinee, and five years later moved to Colby, Clark County, and was one of the oldest and highly respected citizens. She experienced all the hardships of the early pioneers and did her full share towards carving out a home in the wilderness. She was esteemed and respected as a neighbor and friends, for she was always ready to assist in every undertaking that would help the community.

She was apparently in her usual health and helping with the work when stricken. She fell to the floor without a word and remained unconscious to the end. She is survived by her husband, four sons and three daughters, Peter of Dale; Mrs. Frank Chase of Colby; Nick of Neillsville; Katie of Colby; Mike M. of Marshfield; Laura of Colby; John M. of Lake Villa, Ill. Also by one brother, Nick Baer of Marshfield, and one sister, Mrs. Nick Blankenheim of Jefferson, Wis., all of whom, except the sister, were here to attend the funeral, which was held from St. Mary’s Church at 9:30 Monday morning, Rev. H.J. Artmann officiating.

The relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Philippi of Dale; Mr. and Mrs. M.M. Philippi, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Baer, Mrs. Henry Oestreich, Mrs. Phillip Staus, Mrs. Peter Baer, Mrs. Math Jones, Miss Agnes Jones, Willie Jones, of Marshfield; Nick Philippi of Neillsville; John M. Philippi of Lake Villa, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kanter of Mosinee; Mr. and Mrs. John Nillis of Grand Rapids; Mrs. John Findorf of Chicago; Mrs. Math. Maurer Sr., Miss Katie Maurer, Miss Mary Philippi, of Appleton; Mrs. Nick Maurer of Sherwood. Also, the following friends were present, Mrs. Louis Walsdorf and Miss Roth of Thorp, and T.H. Barber of Withee.
