Swarthout, Elijah L. (14 APR 1845 - 9 JAN 1913)
Elijah Lot Swarthout who passed from this life at his farm home in the town of Holeton, Marathon Co., Wis., on Thursday, Jan. 9th, 1913, was born in Lodi, Seneca Co., N.Y., April 14th, 1845, and was 67 years, 8 months and 25 days of age at the time of his death. He came direct to Dorchester, Clark Co. in the month of December 1875, and held many prominent offices in his town. He filled the position of land agent for the Wis. Central for many years, later taking up the insurance business, which he was still engaged in at the time of his death. He was strictly an honest, upright man held in the highest regard by all who knew him.
He was united in marriage to Miss Eva Hugoboom, at Dorchester, on Thursday, Jan. 26th, 1882, who with three children, Lottie, Mrs. Harry Brown of Loyal; Joseph and Blaine of this place, survive to mourn the death of a kind and indulgent husband and father. This entire community mourns with them.
About twelve years ago he moved to this city in order to give his children the advantage of our high school, and resided here until about two years ago when they moved onto their farm.
The funeral was held from the M.E. Church in this city, Sunday afternoon, Rev. W.E. Marsh officiating, and was largely attended by sympathizing friends. The remains were laid to rest in Colby Cemetery.
