Merkun, Johana (20 DEC 1879 - 18 DEC 1974)

Mrs. Johana Merkun, 95, died in Ely, Minnesota on December 18, 1974, in the Ely Blominson Hospital.

The funeral was performed December 20 at 9 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Loyal, with Father Kenneth Jackson officiated. She was brought to Willard (Clark Co., Wis.) and buried in the family plot at Holy Family Cemetery. Graveside Services were performed by Father Michael Mertens, pastor of Holy Family Parish.

Pallbearers were: John Koschak, John Grachek, Anton Pirsh, Frank Bachar, Anton Knapp, and Joseph Novak.

Mrs. Merkun (Zupec) came to this country in 1902, and was married in 1903 in Ely, Minnesota to Anton Merkun.

They came to Willard in 1909 and farmed in the Gorman area until 1947, when Anton Merkun died.

She returned to Ely and made her home with her niece, Hannah Robertson for 26 years. She spent the last two years of her life in a nursing home in Ely.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Agnes Skraba, and by several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Mary of Help Society 174 (K.S.K.J.) of Willard, Wisconsin for 42 years.
