Shaw, Charles Henry (27 April 1853 - 16 April 1937)

Charles Henry Shaw was born April 27, 1853, near Plymouth in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin and passed away April 16, 1937 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Ed Tucker at Lodi.

At the age of eight Mr. Shaw was left an orphan and lived with friends near Plymouth until sixteen years of age when he came to Clark County and worked in the woods, later buying land in the Town of Weston.

On April 15, 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Butterfield and together they established a home, clearing the land and erecting the buildings.

Mrs. Shaw passed away March 26, 1934 and Mr. Shaw has since spent much of his time with his daughters. In April 1936 he suffered a paralytic stroke and in June an operation was performed at Madison whereby his leg was amputated. He suffered greatly but was cheerful and uncomplaining. Every medical aid was procured from him and he was livingly cared for by his daughters, Mrs. Ed Tucker and Mrs. Albert Neis. Mr. Shaw was a loving husband and father and a fine neighbor and will be greatly missed in the community.

He leaves to mourn three children, Mrs. Ed Tucker and Mrs. Albert Neis of Lodi and Linwood Shaw of Christie. Six grandsons, Charles and LaVern Tucker of Lodi; Ray and Everett Shaw of Neillsville; Devere Neis of Michigan and C. S. Neis of Madison and one great-granddaughter and four great-grandsons.

Services were held at the Methodist church in Neillsville with Rev. David La Vinn of Lodi officiating, assisted by Rev. E. Stone. Pallbearers were Wheeler Forman, Al Forman, Julius Bohnsack, Matt Schaefer, Sr., Fred Buchholz, Sr., and Bruce Armitage.

Charles Henry Shaw was born April 27, 1853, at Plymouth, Wisconsin. He was a son of Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw and together with his brothers and one sister, was left an orphan in early childhood.

At the age of sixteen he journeyed to Neillsville, Clark County, Wisconsin, securing employement in lumber camps during the winter months and returning to Plymouth for summer employment.

On April 15, 1876 he was married to Amanda Butterfield at Neillsville, Wis. At this time he purchased a tract of timber land near Neillsville and, with his pioneering spirit and untiring strength he developed a fine farm which was their home for more then half a century.

Four children were born to this union: Charles Linwood of Neillsville; Anna (Mrs. Ed Tucker) and Mildred (Mrs. Albert Neis) of Lodi and Gladys who passed away at the age of two years.

Following the death of his loving wife (Betty) on March 26, 1934, his home has been with his son at Neillsville and daughters at Lodi where he received tender and loving care of which he was always appreciative.

After an illness of nearly a year the end came peacefully on April 16, 1937 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 19 days.

Those left to mourn his passing are Charles Linwood Shaw, Mrs. E. H. Tucker, Mrs. A. R. Neis; together with their families—six grandsons, one great-granddaughter, and four great-grandsons and a large number of friends at Neillsville and Lodi.

Charles Shaw was a man of sterling qualities, and his continual desire to Help and Share with those in need will be long remembered by those who knew him.

Services were conducted a week ago last Sunday by Rev. David H. LaVine of Lodi and the home of his daughter Mrs. Ed Tucker.

Charles Henry Shaw's father was Joseph Shaw a Civil War soldier who died 12 March 1862 of typhoid disease while on the march with his unit near Sikestown Missouri. His mother was Jane (Courter) Shaw who was born 23 December 1832 in New Jersey[probably, Morris County]. She died 24 November 1869 at the town of Plymourth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Both Joseph and Jane (Courter) Shaw are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Town of Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. The Civil War Pension file for Joseph Shaw contains his marriage record to Jane Courter with it occurring on 29 April 1847 at Town of Pequannock, Morris County, New Jersey.
