2 KILLED IN CHILI TRAIN AUTO CRASH

Len Forderbrueck and Mrs. Warneck Killed and Marvin Grap Injured

Leonard Forderbrueck, Neillsville, and Mrs. Ruby Selk Warneck were instantly killed and Marvin Grap, Neillsville, seriously injured when the car in which they were riding was struck by the westbound Omaha passenger train at the railroad crossing in Chili at 1:45 a.m. Friday morning. The men were taking Mrs. Warneck to her home at the time of the fatal accident.

Mr. Grap stated in a dazed condition at the Marshfield hospital that he thought he was driving the car at the time but was not certain. He suffered severe cuts about the face and body and possible internal injuries.

The body of Mr. Forderbrueck was found in the car which had been struck squarely in the center. The body of Mrs. Warneck was found near the tracks about 200 feet west of the crossing. The smashed automobile was carried 1,100 feet before the train came to full stop. Forderbrueck’s skull was fractured, and his left leg, right arm and shoulder broken. Mrs. Warneck suffered fractures of the skull, both legs and one arm as well as internal injuries.

Coroner P. C. Ludovic stated that as soon as Grap is well enough to testify an inquest will be held. No one witnessed the accident except the victims and the train crew.

This was the second fatal railroad crossing accident in Clark County in one week, and another occurred near Marshfield. The same night Leslie Dietz, Milwaukee and two women passengers were killed in an accident on a crossing at Michigan City, Ind.

Mr. Forderbrueck was 29 years of age and a milk hauler for the American Stores Dairy Co. of Neillsville, where he was well known, having lived here over 20 years. A more extended obituary of Mr. Forderbrueck is published elsewhere. The funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Mary’s Church.

Mrs. Ruby Selk Warneck was 25 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Selk of Chili. She was accomplished musician. The funeral services were held Sunday at the Chili Evangelical church with burial in the Fremont Cemetery. A more extended obituary appears in another column.

The smashed car, a 1936 Plymouth, was brought to the Reinhard & Davis Garage, where hundreds viewed the wrecked remains, being one of the worst car wrecks ever seen here.

The funeral of Merrill Gault, who was killed last week, was held Saturday at St. Mary’s church. The wife and seven children survive. Mr. Gault was fatally injured when a train hit the rear of an Ulen Construction Co. truck he was riding on near Spencer. The same day a car of the firm was struck near Owen and carried 400 feet by a train without anyone being seriously injured.

An inquest into the death of Mr. Gault was held at Owen on Tuesday evening by Coroner P. C. Ludovic.
