Dedication

New Greenwood Community High School

Greenwood, Wisconsin, November 13, 1960

Here’s what you bought….

New, modern high school facilities that will serve the young people of this area for many years, plus additional, newly remodeled elementary rooms.

The new high school addition extends over 198 feet west of the old building and is 75 feet wide, except in the shop areas where the building is 30 feet wider. The two story addition has 32,848 square feed of area as compared to the 26,195 square feet in the old building’s three floors and gymnasium.

The new high school addition has (a) thirteen classrooms including two fully equipped, up to date science laboratories, a three room commercial department, an agriculture classroom and a drafting and art room; (b) a beautiful, large library with work rooms; (c) two large well equipped shops, one for industrial arts and the other for vocational agriculture; (d) a modern oil-fired hot water heating system that serves both the new addition and the old building; (e) new shower and dressing rooms; (f) adequate office space in which to conduct the business of the school district; (g) a teachers’ room and conference room; (h) a large, sound proofed music room with individual practice rooms and an instrument and uniform storage room; (i) washrooms on each floor.

The old building has been remodeled to provide (a) nine large cheerful grade classrooms; (b) a cafeteria and hot lunch kitchen that at present serves over 300 lunches a day; (c) new enlarge washrooms; (d) a teacher workroom and materials center.

They made the decisions…..

Building a school that must serve hundreds of young people for the next fifty years or more is a tremendous responsibility. It involves hundreds of decisions, few of them easy. The burden of these decisions, after the electors of the district have voted to build, is borne by the members of the Board of Education and the school administrator. At present, Board members are: Allen Wuethrich, Director; Clayton Braun, Clerk; Arthur Christie, Treasurer; Clarence Meinhardt, Joseph Hribar.

The first Board of Education elected to serve the Greenwood Community School District in 1957 included Loris Dusso, Director; Alfons Hemersbach, Clerk; Albert Neuenfeldt, Treasurer; Frank Govek and Henry Lamovec.

The district’s school administrator throughout the formation of the new school district and the building project has been Clifton Fonstad, Superintendent of Schools.

Points of interest…TOUR GUIDE

Many important features of the new high school addition are not readily apparent, such as the fire resistant construction, the hot water heating system that provides filter cleaned fresh, warmed air throughout both the new addition and the old building, and the modern, enameled steel panel and aluminum construction. But many features are things that you can see for yourself.

You will notice the cheerful color schemes that have been used throughout to add beauty and provide an attractive place in which to work. The drab cinder blocks have been transformed into colorful walls with rubber based masonry paint.
The ceramic tiled floors and the hard surfaced iron spot brick walls in the washrooms and shower rooms, the aluminum window frames, and the enameled steel panels require a minimum of maintenance and will stay new looking for many years.
Individual science experimentation is now possible in the two beautiful science laboratories. These labs have as fine equipment as can be found. The tops of the desks in the chemistry-physics lab are made of stone that is is ipervious to acids, chemicals and heat.
Chalkboards are made of tempered glass. They not only provide an excellent writing surface that is easily seen, but are practically indestructible.

All clocks in the new building are controlled by a master clock in the office. They correct themselves every hour. Over two miles (12,000 feet) of wire was used in connecting up this system.
Good lighting is important in any school and ours has the best. 532 four foot fluorescent light fixtures using almost 1,100 fluorescent tubes have been used in the new building and remodeled portions of the old building.
Plastic sky domes in the upper corridors and washrooms make it possible to use natural light in these areas that are windowless and normally require artificial lighting all the time.
New chairs and chair desks have been selected for comfort, durability and ease of maintenance. The colorful seats, backs and desk tops are solid plastic that will stay looking nice.
The enameled steel wall panels are only one inch thick but sealed in fiber glass insulation makes them as effective a heat barrier as an eight inch block wall.
All electric office equipment of the future will be no problem in the commercial rooms that have been wired for its use. Room 206 is also wired for use of sound equipment in teaching languages.

What it will cost…..

Because the building project is not yet fully complete, and the remodeling and equipping will be done over a period of several years, it is impossible at this time to determine just what the total cost will be exactly. The major cost, however, is shown in the basic contracts for the high school addition and some remodeling in the old building, which are as follows:
General Contractor
P.G. Miron Construction Co., Appleton $252,386.00

Heating and Ventilation
Star Plumbing and Heating Co., Fond du Lac 102,895.00

Plumbing
Thorp Pipe and Supply Co., Thorp 49,952.60

Electrical Work
Peroshek Electric, Greenwood 34, 783.00

Sub total $440,016.60
Architect
Raymond N. LeVee and Associates, Appleton $ 26,401.00

Legal and Supervisory Services 4,100.00

Total $470,517.60

One can only estimate what the costs of completing the remodeling and equipping the new addition and grade building will be when finally finished. Some of this has been done already and the remainder will be done in the future. The science laboratories have been equipped more completely than originally planned because of the aid available through the National Defense Education Act which amounted to about 60% of the cost of this equipment. Much of the remodeling and modernizing is work that would have to be done regardless of the building project such as the new heating system in the old building, the new lighting and modernized wiring, new washrooms and ceiling and floor tile. Estimates of what might be necessary to complete the remodeling and equipping are as follows:
Equipment and Furniture
Science lab equipment $14,000.00
Industrial arts equipment 9,000.00
Seating, desks, furniture 5,000.00
Hot lunch equipment 6,000.00
Shelving, misc. equipment 1,200.00
Remodeling 29,500.00
Site improvement 2,600.00
