Haas, Melvin R. (March 25, 1920 - April 21, 2006)

Melvin R. Haas, age 86, of Thorp passed away on Friday, April 21, 2006 at Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Stanley.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. Fr. Keith Apfelbeck officiated. Burial followed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. Melvin’s grandsons served as pallbearers. Visitation was held on Monday, April 24, 2006 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thorp Funeral Home with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary Service.

Melvin R. Haas was born on March 25, 1920 in rural Thorp, WI to Robert and Irene (Baures) Haas. He later received his education at St. Bernard’s Catholic School. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Henke on June 12, 1946 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Stanley. Together they farmed in the Town of Worden for many years while raising their family of three boys and two girls. Upon retirement, they moved into the City of Thorp. Evelyn later passed away on January 23, 2001.

Melvin’s favorite hobbies were helping on the farm, camping, fishing in Canada, hunting in Wisconsin and Wyoming, and "problem solving" at Elmer’s.

He was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church.

He is survived by his children: Larry Haas, Ronald (Janis) Haas, Marvin (Ann) Haas, Arlene (Dale) Paul, Joan Maier (friend Norm Ligenza) all of Thorp; 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Virginia Mullison of Denver, CO and Theresa Jenness of Thorp; 2 brothers: Jerry (Rita) Haas of Greenwood and Richard (Mary) Haas of Thorp and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Evelyn; one great-grandson Antonio; 4 brothers: Wilfred, Arnold, Jerome and Wayne; 3 sisters: Marie, Coletta, and Phyllis; and one sister Bernadine in infancy.

Thorp Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
