Greisch, Mathias (30 Dec. 1863 - 5 Sept. 1938)
Mathias Greisch, 74, highly respected citizen and business man of Thorp and for 30 years a member of the Clark County board, died in a hospital at Wausau on Monday, September 5, 1938, after a long illness.
Mr. Greisch was born in Milwaukee County, December 30, 1863. He married Mary Jane O’Hara in Sheboygan County 49 years ago, and several years later the couple came to Clark County and settled on a farm west of Neillsville, where they lived for six years. Moving to Thorp, Mr. Greisch established a pump and windmill business, which he carried on until a few years ago.
Besides his long records as a member of the county board of Clark County, he served for eight years on the road and bridge committee and was, for some time, a director in one of the banks at Thorp. Mat Greisch was no doubt one of the best known men in Clark County, and during his long service as public official and in his business dealings, did not make an enemy. Though ill for a number of years, he bore his burden cheerfully and without complaint.
He is survived by his wife and one son, Cletus, editor of the newspaper at Edgar, Wis., and two grandsons, Jerry and John Greisch. One son, Leander, died at the age of four. There remain also a brother and two sisters; Peter Greisch, Prairie du Chein; Mrs. Peter Reuter, Hollywood, Calif.; and Mrs. W. A. Leason of Neillsville, Wis.
The funeral was held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at Thorp at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery in Neillsville, Wis. Those who attended from Neillsville are Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Leason, Mrs. M. E. Bennett and Jesse A. Leason of St. Paul.
