Zimmerman, Mary (1858 - 15 Feb. 1939)

Mrs. John G. Zimmerman passed away Wednesday February 15, at 3 o’clock p.m. with heart trouble after a brief illness at her home at 278 South Hewett Street.

Mary Shemak was born in the year 1858 to Joseph and Barbara Shemak in Castle Rock Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, and the parents having immigrated to the United States from Bohemia in 1854 and homesteade3d a farm in Grant County.

On September 25, 1883, she was married to John G. Zimmerman of Avoca, a merchant of that community for many years. August 15, 1901, Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman came to Neillsville where he bought an interest in a department store which operated until his partner’s death under the name of Tragsdorf & Zimmerman. Later partners were John Kolar, John E. Halliday and Mr. Zimmerman’s sons. Nine year ago they sold the business and Mr. Zimmerman retired. He passed away November 7, 1932.

Three sons were born to them: George F. and Joseph A., Neillsville, and Harry Francis of Madelina, Minn.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of the Christian Science church and of Carmi Chapter, No. 60, O. E. S., Neillsville, Wis. She was well known throughout the community for her splendid character and ability along domestic lines. Her home was spotless, yet her grandchildren and their friends were most welcome at all times.

The funeral will be held at Lowe’s Funeral Home their Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Christian Science, interment taking place in the family lot in the Neillsville City.
